Ken's primary research area is ontology based computing. This includes research in the Semantic Web, formal (ontology-based) methods for software engineering and software modeling, ontology-based methods in bioinformatics, and high-performance semantically rich information retrieval.

Professor Baclawski holds 10 patents. He has authored over 360 professional articles in such journals and conferences as the National Academy of Science, Information Systems, the International Conference on Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology, the Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing, and the International Semantic Web Conference. He has served on numerous peer review panels for the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Association for Computing Machinery and has served on many program committees of research conferences. He serves as a consultant to companies and government laboratories, and has edited and written several books and research monographs.

KenB reported that the second workshop at the IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Methods in Situation Awareness and Decision Support (CogSIMA) happened in May, and that there were many great discussions. He has not yet had time to consolidate the feedback into a new release of the communique. KenB previously shared the draft (as discussed in the [[SWAO:Conference_Call_20210510|Conference_Call_20210510]] notes).

=== Mapping Events (from Narratives) ===

AndreaW overviewed [https://swao.s3.amazonaws.com/Mapping+Event+Text+to+RDF.pptx her presentation]. There was some confusion over what was being discussed. So, the name of the PowerPoint was updated to "Creating a Knowledge Graph/RDF Triples from Events in Text".

The presentation shows parsing of text from a narrative from the US Holocaust Museum. The parse was done using [https://spacy.io/ spaCy]. The analysis used basic information such as parts-of-speech, dependency parsing, definitions and synonyms to tie the text back to an ontology of events (i.e., [https://github.com/ontoinsights/deep_narrative_analysis/tree/master/ontologies this ontology] in GitHub).

An outstanding question was what was the spaCy training data. That was answered post-call via email. The spaCy transformer model (used in this work) was trained on the OntoNotes 5 corpus.

There was also a brief sidebar discussion of KenB's [https://ken.baclawski.com/pub/2018/21/public.pdf Observer Effect paper], and how observations are captured in the Event ontology. AndreaW referenced the event-subclasses.pdf image (in the GitHub repository linked above) to show that observations (Measurements) are captured as Events with ReportedValues, at a time and place. And, each Measurement instance can have a topic - which is the thing measured/observed/reported.

=== Ontology Articulation Guidelines ===

The latter half of the call was spent reviewing the [https://swao.s3.amazonaws.com/Ontology+Articulation+Guidelines.docx Ontology Articulation Guidelines] document. The text in that document was assembled from discussions over the previous 5 months, regarding what should be included. As the attendees reviewed the document, additions and clarifications were made inline.

The document linked above is the version with changes. It is likely that several papers (or perhaps a book) could result from the work. It was decided that any articulation of guidelines mandated first explaining the word, "ontology".

NEW ACTION: AndreaW to take a stab at initial text for "What is an ontology?", for review in the next meeting.

KenB mentioned that the call for papers for a Special Issue of IAOA Applied Ontology will be announced. That issue will be based on the 2020 Summit (Knowledge Graphs). There was a short discussion of timing for Abstracts and final submissions (~Sept 1).

= Bridging the Gap between the Semantic Web community and the Ontology Community =

The role that ontologies play or can play in designing and employing semantic technologies has been widely acknowledged by the Semantic Web and Linked Data communities. But the level of collaboration between these communities and the Applied Ontology community has been much less than expected.

These communities actually share many common goals, common technologies, and a common interest in well-engineered applied ontologies. Many of those in the Applied Ontology community promote and use Semantic Web technologies and reasoning methods in everyday practice; similarly, many in the Semantic Web community advocate more rigorous and principled ontologies based on ontological analysis. All the communities share the need for a common semantic understanding and a formal representation of the domain at hand. The Semantic Web, Linked Data, Big Data, and Knowledge Graph communities also have challenges to do with large scale applications and linking of vast heterogeneous data, so these communities also have different foci.

The '''Semantic Web Applied Ontology (SWAO) Special Interest Group''' of the [http://www.iaoa.org International Association for Ontology and its Applications (IAOA)] was established to bring all perspectives to the table, thus creating a forum for the multiple communities to work collaboratively in tackling common problems. On CogSima dates - see this from email from Ken: the CogSIMA conference where I was planning to have a workshop has been postponed. It will now be in August or September.

Ken has been getting bounces

From what to what?

At this point we looked at examples on Ken’s and Mike’s emails.

Outcome: These are not bounces they are simply from an address called ‘bounces’.

MB: Sounds like a code review weakness - someone thinks of a name for a thing in one context that makes no sense in other contexts.

Ken was unable to log in to the thing.

MB has not tried recently. Looked now.

When Ken goes to the link there is no clear indication of how to accept the post or pending subscription.

The misnamed 'bounces' email sends one email per day for pending subscriptions. The one we are seeing was actioned by Frank Loebe but not right away. There were emails each day to Ken and to Mike from the poorly named ‘bounces’ address until he did.

Conclusion: We continue to not need to do anything on these.

Industry and Standards (I&S) Committee

-- The IAOA Industry & Standards Committee has two core purposes: (a) to foster the use of applied ontology in standardization initiatives, and (b) to facilitate the interactions across people in industry and in applied ontology research. Activities include the dissemination of information about initiatives with the aim to gather experts interested in the development of ontologically-sound standards, and the organization of virtual and physical meetings and events where to discuss how to understand and apply ontological approaches and methodologies.

Mission Statement

-- Standards may have a huge impact at the domain level, as in industry, communication and business, and on society at large. In order to better align the purpose and organization of standards, and to anticipate their consequences, it is important to improve clarity of standards and the understanding of the domains they address. The use of ontological analysis and ontology-based methodologies are important factors for the development of clear and well organized standards, and to ensure the correct understanding of their domain of application.

-- Today industry uses applications that crucially rely on semantic technologies. In the last 30 years, applied ontology has changed the way to information is understood and classified. Semantic technologies can be a decisive asset in exploitation of information potentialities in industry. This is especially true when robust and reliable information elaboration, sharing, and management are needed. The mutual discussion and interbreeding of industrial application concerns and applied ontology methodologies can improve the work of both communities and help to develop approaches better suited to understand and solve existing problems.

Industry and Standards (I&S) Committee

-- The IAOA Industry & Standards Committee has two core purposes: (a) to foster the use of applied ontology in standardization initiatives, and (b) to facilitate the interactions across people in industry and in applied ontology research. Activities include the dissemination of information about initiatives with the aim to gather experts interested in the development of ontologically-sound standards, and the organization of virtual and physical meetings and events where to discuss how to understand and apply ontological approaches and methodologies.

Mission Statement

-- Standards may have a huge impact at the domain level, as in industry, communication and business, and on society at large. In order to better align the purpose and organization of standards, and to anticipate their consequences, it is important to improve clarity of standards and the understanding of the domains they address. The use of ontological analysis and ontology-based methodologies are important factors for the development of clear and well organized standards, and to ensure the correct understanding of their domain of application.

-- Today industry uses applications that crucially rely on semantic technologies. In the last 30 years, applied ontology has changed the way to information is understood and classified. Semantic technologies can be a decisive asset in exploitation of information potentialities in industry. This is especially true when robust and reliable information elaboration, sharing, and management are needed. The mutual discussion and interbreeding of industrial application concerns and applied ontology methodologies can improve the work of both communities and help to develop approaches better suited to understand and solve existing problems.

-- The I&S Committee aims to bring together IAOA members and people working in industry and standards development to facilitate information sharing as well as mutual discussion and co-ordination of activities and resources.
