IAOA Semantic Web Applied Ontology (SWAO) SIG

THIS MEETING TOOK PLACE ON FRIDAY 14 JANUARY 2022. (Meetings have moved to the second Friday of the month at 2pm Eastern Time.)

* We use Zoom for these meetings - details at Connection Details

Agenda
* Actions from last meeting
** RobertR liaison status with the IAOA Education Committee still has not occurred since no meetings have yet been held
* Discussion/presentation of RobertR's ontology definitions spreadsheet
* Discussion of the MIRO article
* Continued discussion of ontology and knowledge graph definitions from the December SWAO meeting
** Posted in this document
* Housekeeping and next meeting
* AoB

Proceedings
* Preliminary discussion about the antifraud ontology announced on the Ontology Forum distribution list
** GAO Antifraud Resource is based on GAO’s Fraud Ontology — "a rigorous classification of fraud schemes affecting federal programs and operations—serves as the backbone for understanding, evaluating, and measuring all aspects of federal fraud schemes, including their participants, mechanisms, and impacts"
*** The site provides a user friendly, web-based platform for interacting with the model and identifying resources to support fraud risk management
*** This project was overviewed by Leia Dickerson in the 2021 Ontology Summit series
*** Question was raised whether this could be more integrated with cyber security

* For the next 6 months or so, SWAO will need another individual to run the meetings (AndreaW has several other commitments, as does MikeB)
** Either ToddS or KenB will run the sessions for the coming months
** AndreaW updated the SWAO meeting connection details to reflect KenB's Zoom information

* Discussion of upper ontologies migrated to a discussion of IOF (Industry Ontology Foundry)
** There is concern that all upper ontologies could be rejected due to issues and systemic bias for a single one (such as BFO)
** BFO issues include the requirement for realism and the lack of multiple inheritance
** Committing to an upper ontology means committing to its conceptual distinctions, formal semantics, philosophical worldviews, metaphysical biases, etc., and thus claims about how the world is
*** These need to be evaluated for relevance, agreement with potential users and developers, complexity, and consistency with the beliefs and desired world views (if any) of the ontology to be developed
** Is valuable to understand where BFO is used and where it is used but its issues are "worked around"
** The majority of the following insights on IOF were provided by ToddS:
*** Development principles for IOF are in harmony with OntoCommons
*** IOF is less concerned about BFO's requirement of realism and more concerned with 'practical application' for physics and mathematics for manufacturing
*** IOF Core to be released soon, with BFO formally embedded
*** A release where BFO is "hidden" has also been discussed as a possibility

* Discussion of the MIRO article
** MIRO is the acronym for "Minimum Information for Reporting an Ontology"
** Provides a set of guidelines to facilitate consistency and completeness when documenting published ontologies
** There are 7 areas for documentation, and 3-11 guidelines within each area (34 guidelines total)
*** 28 guidelines are MUSTs, 3 SHOULDs and 3 OPTIONALs
*** Topic areas are 'basics', motivation, scope and dev community, knowledge acquisition, content, change mgmt, and testing/QA
*** It was noted that this seems heavy but can be valuable for very large, heavily referenced/reused ontologies
** As part of the discussion, 'incremental development of semantics' was discussed
*** This is addressed in a forthcoming paper in the Journal of Applied Ontology, "Issues in Incrementally Adding Better Semantics to Knowledge Graphs" by Gary Berg-Cross
*** The theory is to add data to an ontology/knowledge graph and then fix the ontology in order to support it
*** This is as opposed to a top-down/upper ontology definitional approach
*** The underlying definition of the concepts is in TypeScript

* Discussion of ontology concepts by RobertR
** Need alternate wording than upper/top-level/... ontology since these imply direction and specific architectures, as opposed to intent
*** "Core" implies "center" with other ontologies extending from it or layering around it
*** "Upper" implies that other ontologies are below it and that there are levels of gradation
*** "Top-level" vs "foundational" imply that other ontologies are "below"/"above" them
**** For example, in computer science, hierarchies are typically drawn with the most general at the top, whereas in biology, the most general is at the bottom
*** "Conceptual" ontology could be either broader or narrower
** "General", "generic", "common" ontology may be more appropriate names
** Take-aways:
*** Important to have definitions for the various types of ontologies
*** Should explore the possible architectures of linked ontologies with varying degrees of generality
*** Does it matter if an ontology is only categorical or abstract, or also includes instances?
*** Important to understand how the world is perceived/partitioned, and put the conceptual archetypes within that structure
**** For example, "prescribed vs described", "occurrent vs endurant", "dependent/relative/mediating", "concrete vs abstract" , ...
*** Important to define these concepts and then assess whether they are needed when developing an ontology
*** Need to distinguish between "truth makers" (what something is/semantic building blocks) and the data that one has about the thing
**** Also need to understand the quality of the data

IAOA Semantic Web Applied Ontology (SWAO) SIG

THIS MEETING TOOK PLACE ON FRIDAY 14 JANUARY 2022. (Meetings have moved to the second Friday of the month at 2pm Eastern Time.)

* We use Zoom for these meetings - details at Connection Details

Agenda
* Actions from last meeting
** RobertR liaison status with the IAOA Education Committee still has not occurred since no meetings have yet been held
* Discussion/presentation of RobertR's ontology definitions spreadsheet
* Discussion of the MIRO article
* Continued discussion of ontology and knowledge graph definitions from the December SWAO meeting
** Posted in this document
* Housekeeping and next meeting
* AoB

* Discussion of upper ontologies migrated to a discussion of the use of BFO in the IOF (Industry Ontology Foundry)
** There is concern that all upper ontologies could be rejected due to issues with one (such as BFO)
** BFO issues include the requirement for realism and the lack of multiple inheritance
** Committing to an upper ontology means committing to its conceptual distinctions
*** These need to be evaluated that they are relevant and consistent with the desired world view for the ontology to be developed
*** BFO, Dolce and UFO were originally studied as options for the foundational ontology
*** BFO was chosen but the criteria for evaluation may have been incomplete
*** Results from the evaluation included that the BFO natural language descriptions were better and that Dolce was too axiomatized
** Is valuable to understand where BFO is used and where it is used but "worked around"

*** This is addressed in a forthcoming paper in the Journal of Applied Ontology, "
*** The theory is to add data to an ontology/knowledge graph and then fix the ontology in order to support it
*** This is as opposed to a top-down/upper ontology definitional approach
*** The underlying definition of the concepts is in TypeScript

Ontology Definitions and Analysis
There was a good discussion of the definitions of ontology, graph and knowledge graph based on a preliminary document by AndreaW. This document was edited during the meeting to incorporate discussion points.

The main discussion was focused on the definition of ontology. The definition coming out of the meeting is:

"A partial, simplified description of the categories of things, attributes and relationships, in a topic area, created by a community of users for an explicit purpose, and specified in some formalism"

Other items of discussion:
* The goal of the ontology definition in the paper is to encompass all types of ontologies (foundational, computational, applied, ...)
** A hierarchy of definitions (as defined by RobertR and included below) could be created, but a general definition is needed
* Definitions from the Education Committee's term list were examined
** It was noted that Guarino's definition (#7) is old and has been revised
** Guarino's updated definition: "An ontology makes explicit people's distinctions and assumptions about the nature and structure of a portion of the world (the domain of discourse)"
** The definition in #6 is problematic since an ontology may start from a taxonomy, but this is not required
* A possible hierarchy of "ontologies" was proposed by RobertR with "sub-classes":
** Formal ontology
** "An ontology, consisting of categorical and non-categorical terms, explicitly expressed in an artificial language, such as FOL"
*** The idea is formalizing the ontology. The conceptualization is expressed in some formalism, whether computable or not
** Computational ontology
** "A formal ontology expressed in a computable artificial language"
*** The conceptualization is both expressed in a formalism and in a computational form, which may be the same
** Applied ontology - 2 senses:
** "A computational ontology that is intended or designed to be used for some particular application (broadly construed), domain of interest, database, or dataset"
*** This sense moves from a computable ontology - that may not have a specific intended context or application in mind - to an application area
** "An ontology that is intended or designed to be used for some particular application (broadly construed), domain of interest, database, or dataset"
*** This sense appeals to the phrasing of the name, and matches the intended meaning accordingly; an applied ontology may be any type of ontology (general or computational) but with an application in mind (if not executed)
** This specialization hierarchy will be discussed further at the January meeting, reviewing RobertR's presentation

Other Business
KenB noted an interesting article, "MIRO: guidelines for minimum information for the reporting of an ontology". This will also be discussed at January's meeting.

Next Meeting
The next SWAO SIG meeting will be January 14 2022, 2pm Eastern Time (Standard time, world-wide). We will continue discussing the definition of ontology.

Ontology Definitions and Analysis
There was a good discussion of the definitions of ontology, graph and knowledge graph in this document. Note that the document has been edited to include feedback received during the meeting.

The main discussion was focused on the definition of ontology. The definition from the paper is:

"A partial, simplified description of the categories of things, attributes and relationships, in a topic area, created by a community of users for an explicit purpose, and specified in some formalism"

Other items of discussion:
* The goal of the ontology definition in the paper was to encompass all types of ontologies (foundational, computational, applied, ...)
** A hierarchy of definitions (as defined by RobertR and included below) could be created, but a general definition is needed
* Definitions from the Education Committee's term list were examined
** It was noted that Guarino's definition (#7) is old and has been revised
** And the definition in #6 is problematic since an ontology may start from a taxonomy, but this is not required
** Guarino's updated definition: "An ontology makes explicit people's distinctions and assumptions about the nature and structure of a portion of the world (the domain of discourse)"
* A possible hierarchy of "ontologies" was proposed by RobertR which "sub-classed":
** Formal ontology
** "An ontology, consisting of categorical and non-categorical terms, explicitly expressed in an artificial language, such as FOL"
** The idea is formalizing the ontology. The conceptualization is expressed in some formalism, whether computable or not
** Computational ontology
** "A formal ontology expressed in a computable artificial language"
** The conceptualization is both expressed in a formalism and in a computational form, which may be the same
** Applied ontology - 2 senses:
** "A computational ontology that is intended or designed to be used for some particular application (broadly construed), domain of intertest, database, or dataset" "An ontology that is intended or designed to be
** This will be discussed further at the January meeting
THIS MEETING TOOK PLACE ON MONDAY 11 OCTOBER 2021

Meetings are normally on the first Monday of the month at 2pm Eastern Time.
This meeting was moved to increase attendance, since various participants were available due to country holidays.

GOING FORWARD ... Due to attendance problems with people's schedules, it was decided to move the meetings to the second Friday of each month, leaving the time at 2pm Eastern.

* We use Zoom for these meetings - details at Connection Details

Agenda
* Actions from last meeting
** KenB status update on the workshop communique from the IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Methods in Situation Awareness and Decision Support (CogSIMA)
* Main points for a analysis of the various definitions of ontologies
** Decision to write a paper on this topic
* Housekeeping and next meeting
* AoB

Proceedings
Actions Review
* KenB was not in attendance - CogSIMA update still OPEN

New action items discussed below.

Ontology Definitions and Analysis
There was a healthy discussion of these slides. Note that the slides have been edited to include all the feedback received before and during the meeting.

The main discussion points are:

* The idea of writing a paper originated with a discussion of ontology "styles" by Mike Bennett. That discussion morphed into one about "guidelines". But, before discussing guidelines, one needs to have a definition of what an ontology "is".
** The latter has been the subject of the last several conference calls.
* A definite focus is to bring together different communities (as defined by SWAO's charter)
** SWAO has a focus on "applied" ontologies -> So, this puts a focus on "practical" ontologies
** "Practical" is defined as "of or concerned with the actual doing or use of something rather than with theory and ideas"
** This may be "bottom up", "top down" and/or "middle out" depending on how the problem is defined
* Can we address "problem solving" ontologies -> Ontologies meant to address specific problems and define concepts for specific domains
** How does the rendering of the ontology play into the problem?
*** Common language vs FOL
*** Can we compare semantic web applications to applied ontology logic applications?
* "Machine processable" is an important part of a definition of ontology
** BUT, machine processable does not necessarily require a FOL definition
** One can follow from the other
* A DEFINITION:
** Ontology can be defined as a partial, simplified conceptualization of the world as it is assumed to exist by a community of users
** A conceptualization created for an explicit purpose and defined in a language
** Language should be serializable to a machine processable form
* Important to emphasize that different types of ontologies exist for different purposes, such as vocabulary defn, knowledge sharing, ...
* Logical formalism helps to disambiguate multiple definitions of terms, different layers of logic
** And grounds primitive concepts
* Uses of ontologies aid in interactions with real-world meaning - NLP, data fusion, ...
** Need to distinguish between concept and data (concept is about defining what something is, vs data being the specific info that some entity has)
** The data may be a "digital twin" or may only be a surrogate for the concept
* Reasoning over data - starts from use case with classes and restrictions of the problem space
* Over the years, much has been discussed about the "semantic ladder"
** Moving from dictionaries to taxonomies to thesauri to ontology
** Need to relate the different aspects of the semantic ladder to the themes of SWAO (semantic web and applied onto)
** Requires different activities across spectrum; Want to use all parts of the spectrum
** There are more constraints in FOL - really moving to more specific definitions
** Is this about adding "annotations"?
* You can annotate concepts and then take in 1 of 2 (or 3?) directions:
** Probability/possibility are involved - A variety of different things can result from x - depending on the conditions
*** For example, snowfall can melt or can turn to ice or ?? - So, things about e.g snow may not be able to be axiomatized with the expressive power we have available in our ontology language
* => There are things we can axiomatize, but only in relation to concepts we won't have data for (e.g. social / commitments)
** Versus things that are axiomatized and for which we have data
** Similarly, a "taxonomy" of business terms may include axioms but there may be concepts that can't be axiomatized (that need definitions)
*** May have nothing to do with actual data so need human level definitions
* Can use an ontology to define how things are connected
** A "coherent descriptional framework"
* (NEW ACTIONS) RobertR:
** Liaison with IAOA Education Committee regarding SWAO defining "what is an ontology"
** Share spreadsheet that is a catalog of definitions of 'ontology', ... / Would only be used with attribution
** From a quick review of the spreadsheet, questions came up as what a "generic"/general ontology is? Is it top-level or foundational or about abstract concepts?

Next Meeting
The next SWAO SIG meeting will be November 12 2021, 2pm Eastern Time. (Back on standard time, world-wide.)
After discussion with the participants, a Friday afternoon call was deemed the best alternative.

The topic of discussion will be a review of an "ontology" writeup (AndreaW to summarize) based on the above discussion.
IAOA Semantic Web Applied Ontology (SWAO) SIG

THIS MEETING TOOK PLACE ON MONDAY 11 OCTOBER 2021

Meetings are normally on the first Monday of the month at 2pm Eastern Time.
This meeting was moved to increase attendance, since various participants were available due to country holidays.

GOING FORWARD ... Due to attendance problems with people's schedules, it was decided to move the meetings to the second Friday of each month, leaving the time at 2pm Eastern.

* We use Zoom for these meetings - details at Connection Details

Agenda
* Actions from last meeting
** KenB status update on the workshop communique from the IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Methods in Situation Awareness and Decision Support (CogSIMA)
* Main points for a analysis of the various definitions of ontologies
** Decision to write a paper on this topic
* Housekeeping and next meeting
* AoB

Proceedings
Actions Review
* KenB was not in attendance - CogSIMA update still OPEN

New action items discussed below.

Ontology Definitions and Analysis
There was a healthy discussion of the slides available at xxx, with the main points below:

** One can follow from the other
* A DEFINITION:
* (NEW ACTIONS) RobertR:
