IAOA Semantic Web Applied Ontology (SWAO) SIG
Meetings are normally on the first Monday of the month at these times.
This week we will close out the initial actions for our proposed issue of the Journal of Applied Ontology.
Agenda
- Issue of the Journal of Applied Ontology
- Status update - we finalized all the dates, wording etc. at our last meeting
- This was intended to go out mid-June after giving folks on this list time to review the wording
- Subsequently noticed that there is a request / approval process for proposing editions of the Journal
- presumably all the responses we got from the Journal folks were on the assumption that we knew about that link?
- Subsequently another call for papers has gone out, so I wanted to check the dates didn't clash
- It looks like they don't so that's OK
- Next actions
- Status update - we finalized all the dates, wording etc. at our last meeting
- Housekeeping
- Any changes / updates?
- Other Ideas
- Progress on 'Stack Overflow' type of resource
- Use of the Blog
- More general ideas for information resource on applied ontology and Semantic Web principles
- AOB
- Next Meeting

Agenda Item 1. Issue of the Journal of Applied Ontology
[15:07] Mike Bennett: Update from Mike:
[15:07] Mike Bennett: The draft CfP was ready to go out, but we now are aware of a process requirement for proposed journal editions
[15:07] ElieAbi-Lahoud: http://www.iossubmissions.com/applied-ontology/content/propose-special-issue
[15:10] Mike Bennett: We had been assuming we would just send our agreed CfP out into the wide world
[15:10] Mike Bennett: What is the requirement now we are aware of that page?
[15:11] Mike Bennett: Presumably that we send them the answers to the list of questions, at least.
[15:12] Mike Bennett: Solution: Just click on the email link and send them our proposal.
[15:13] Mike Bennett: This would include the answers to the question.
[15:13] Mike Bennett: Q: Access to Editorial Board: how many of these people do we have access to directly and how many do we need to invite
[15:14] Mike Bennett: Editorial Board is all the people who will be asked to review papers.
[15:15] Mike Bennett: THis is a tentative list
[15:15] Mike Bennett: Editorial Board so far is the SWAO Memebership plus others we ask.
[15:16] Mike Bennett: What is our membership list? That will be the people subscribed to the mailing list
[15:16] Mike Bennett: We can get that from Frank.
[15:16] Mike Bennett: We can get this directly without bothering Frank.
[15:17] Mike Bennett: However, Mike's and Elie's credentials for this did work when we last tried.
[15:18] Mike Bennett: Action: MB to mail Frank about the list of members and if possible the log-in credentials question for Elie and Mike.
[15:19] Mike Bennett: Deadline of Dec 15
[15:20] ElieAbi-Lahoud: Are you still on? I cannot hear you anymore...
[15:20] Mike Bennett: Let's make sure we do have the answers to all the questions. These are:
[15:21] Mike Bennett: Topic of the special issue
Names of all guest editors
A tentative list of reviewers or Guest Editorial Board members
A short description of the topic
Why the topic is currently of interest
Suggested timeline
Credentials of the guest editors regarding their research impact and their community standing with respect to the topic
Optionally, any supplementary information
[15:21] Mike Bennett: Topic: Yes: IAOA Journal of Applied Ontology Special Issue on the Role of Ontologies in Linked Data, Big Data and Semantic Web Applications.
[15:22] Mike Bennett: Names of all guest editors:
[15:22] Mike Bennett: Mike Bennett
Ken Baclawski
[15:23] Mike Bennett: (i.e. the co-editors of this edition)
[15:23] Mike Bennett: A tentative list of reviewers or Guest Editorial Board members: SWAO Membership plus some others we may choose
[15:24] Mike Bennett: Do have any names we know now that we will want to invite onto the Edituroal Board?
[15:24] Mike Bennett: (not at present)
[15:24] Mike Bennett: Elie I'll reach out to a few people who might be able to ask.
[15:25] Mike Bennett: A short description of the topic
[15:25] Mike Bennett: The IAOA Semantic Web Applied Ontology (SWAO) Special Interest Group [1] welcomes the submission of papers focusing on the role of ontologies in the areas of Linked Data, Big Data and the Semantic Web. Our goal is to collect a diverse set of papers concerned with the use of ontologies in support of these areas.
[15:25] Mike Bennett: (i.e. the first paragraph)
[15:25] Mike Bennett: Why the topic is currently of interest
[15:25] Mike Bennett: See description.
[15:26] Mike Bennett: It's all about bringing together communities of practice from Applied Ontology and Semantic Web, along with linked data and big data communities.
[15:28] Mike Bennett: Cross pollination of best practice between these communities
[15:28] Mike Bennett: Refer to the OS Communique for the wording for this.
[15:29] Mike Bennett: Cite the communique as the reason for it being currently of interest.
[15:29] Mike Bennett: Suggested timeline: Yes - see CfP text
[15:29] Mike Bennett: Credentials of the guest editors regarding their research impact and their community standing with respect to the topic
[15:30] Mike Bennett: Looking at the bullets:
[15:30] Mike Bennett: The role that ontologies play (or can play) in Linked Data, Big Data and Semantic Web Applications
Engineering of ontologies to address integration and domain-specific modeling issues
Sharing and reuse of ontologies within and across application or domain areas
Automation and tooling in support of ontology development
[15:30] Mike Bennett: Is the last one a sub-set of the 2nd one?
[15:30] Mike Bennett: Are the first and last not only focused on ontology development but also the application of ontology. So these might be synonymous.
[15:32] Mike Bennett: Bullet 2 is the application of ontologies to address other issues, not issues in developing ontologies.
[15:33] Mike Bennett: Bullet 2 refers to one very specific application of ontologies
[15:34] Mike Bennett: We should broaden this ({minor edit) to describe at least the main other applications of ontologies, such as reasoning and semantic querying.
[15:35] Mike Bennett: To clarify on editors, we have the Journal Editors, we have Mike and Ken as co-editors of this special issue, and we have the editorial board.
[15:35] Mike Bennett: There was some confusion as to which of these come under the definition of "Guest Editors". The answer is we think this meant the Co-editors of the edition.
[15:36] Mike Bennett: so for other names, these are on the Editorial Board.
[15:37] Mike Bennett: Is bullet 4 out of place?
[15:37] Mike Bennett: We really want to focus on the role that ontologies play in these kinds of applications. Bullet 4 doesn't talk to that.
[15:39] Mike Bennett: Tracks:
[15:39] Mike Bennett: Track A: Common Reusable Semantic Content - Co-Champions: Mike Bennett, Andrea Westerinen, Gary Berg Cross
Track B: Making use of Ontologies: Tools, Services, and Techniques - Co-Champions: Christoph Lange, Alan Rector
Track C: Overcoming Ontology Engineering Bottlenecks - Co-Champions: Krzysztof Janowicz, Pascal Hitzler, Matthew West
Track D: Tackling the Variety Problem in Big Data
[15:40] Mike Bennett: The role of tools is clearer in that context.
[15:40] Mike Bennett: so Bullet 4 should be clearly in this context.
[15:40] Mike Bennett: If tweak Bullet Bullet 4 to make that clear, then we can keep it.
[15:42] Mike Bennett: Tooling and techniques in support of ontology development for these different ways of using ontoligies
[15:42] Mike Bennett: Tooling and techniques in support of ontology development for Linked Data, Big Data and Semantic Web Applications.
[15:44] Mike Bennett: Credentials of the guest editors regarding their research impact and their community standing with respect to the topic
[15:45] Mike Bennett: Action: Miek and Ken to provide one liners
[15:45] Mike Bennett: Ken will provide a link to his CV.
[15:45] Ken Baclawski: http://www.ccs.neu.edu/home/kenb/vitae.pdf
[15:45] Mike Bennett: Mike to write something about industry
[15:46] Mike Bennett: Optionally, any supplementary information: The Draft CfP text as written.
[15:46] Mike Bennett: Actions: MB to mail Nicola and Mark with the above, today.
