Open-World Assumption

1. The assumption that we capture knowledge within an ontology or ontology-like resource in an ongoing process as we discover it, so that we can at no stage guarantee that we have discovered complete information — hence no conclusions should be drawn from the fact that a given assertion is not recorded in our system. 2. In a formal system of logic used for knowledge representation, the open-world assumption is the assumption that the truth value of a statement may be true irrespective of whether or not it is known to be true.
