IAOA Semantic Web Applied Ontology (SWAO) SIG
Meetings are normally on the first Monday of the month at these times.
- We will use GoToMeeting for this meeting - details at Connection Details

Agenda
Finalize the taxonomy and the properties to go with it.

Websites
Main IAOA Website
KB: At the last IAOA Exec Co meeting - asked if SWAO wanted to help with the website.
This is for the 'News' column on the IAOA Website.
This means we can post SWAO activities on there. (First, we need some activity)
Updates
Industrial Ontology Foundry (IOF)
1. KB is going to NIST tomorrow for the IOF meeting. Will cover proposal for a WG on situation management and decision making.
MB will be there also. so we can write up something for the SWAO blog and / or the above news column, given the agenda of SWAO on these things.
CogSima
The 2 communities here are the CogSima community on situation management, and the IOF community. So this fits in with our thing on bridging between communities.
Next CogSima conference is start of May at University of Victoria in BC.
Barry Smith will be there, possibly as keynote speaker.
BS talk will not be about BFO. Will talk about the Turing Test.
Aside – Barry Smith Writings
Barry Smith also wrote an article, which KB reviewed. Reaction was it seems thin on arguments.
MB has promised some people a blog with reactions to Barry’s book, intro sections.
MB can do this on the SWAO site, if we are interested in having this there. This will take on some of Barry Smith's arguments against Conceptualist ontology.
Other CogSima Possibilities
Could MB do a tutorial on 'Industrial Strength Ontologies' at CogSima?
MB: Yes. Will have to confirm travel plans but this is very much of interest so I am sure I can make it work.
KB previously did a tutorial. Industrial and commercial ontologies - would be of interest to the CogSima audience which runs equal proportions of academic, government (mil; various not just US) and industry.
Aim: Get people excited about ontologies.
Next steps on that: Send a proposal to the Tutorial Chair.
Dates: May 4 - 7
If MB can't find a place to submit this then send to KB. Deadline is 10 December.
Tutorials are half day, on the Monday.
SWAO Iniatives
So now we have multiple SWAO initiatives - the CogSima Workshop and tutorial, as well as the IOF activities. CogSima also has connection with the Information Fusion community.
Information Fusion is where you have multiple sensors and need to combine those. Involves algorithms for spatial and temporal registration. Relates to Internet of Things as well as to Situational Awareness.
Use examples in the tutorial about e.g.. how some data people don't distinguish data versus the things the data is about.
Many people even in Info Fusion may be aware of the data quality issues but may not be thinking about this ontologically.
Tell them more about how to deal with these ontological issues.
AoB?
Have we looked into Multi Level Modeling (of which MOF is an example), in software engineering?
Is there a connection with ontology (MB thinks not, by definition; it is about design not concepts).
KB agrees.
KB wrote a paper on formalizing MLM. Found all sorts of adjoint functors. Possibly these are the relationship between syntax and semantics.
So this might be worth investigating further.
